Molecular orbital theory- This theory was given by Muliken and Hund in 1932. It explains why and how molecules are formed. 

Some of the postulates of Molecular orbital theory according to Linear Combination of Atomic Orbitals are -

  • Atomic orbitals overlap to form molecular orbitals. So, the number of atomic orbitals is equal to the number of molecular orbitals.
  • Atomic orbitals should be overlapped in such a way that maximum overlapping takes place. 
  • The greater the overlapping greater the election density between the nuclei hence increasing the force of attraction in the formation of a stronger bond.
