Food Chain:
A food chain is a linear sequence that illustrates the transfer of energy and nutrients in an ecosystem. It depicts the flow of energy from one organism to another, starting with a producer and ending with a top predator. In a typical food chain, plants, known as producers, convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. Herbivores, or primary consumers, feed on these plants, and they are in turn consumed by carnivores, known as secondary consumers. The process continues with tertiary consumers and sometimes quaternary consumers, each feeding on the organism below them in the chain. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break down dead organisms and organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil and completing the cycle.
the ecosystem is characterised by the energy flow and the circulation of material through its members. in other words the different organisms of an ecosystem i.e. plants and animals are linked together by their nutritional requirements called food chain.

Food Web:
A food web is a more complex and interconnected system of food chains that exist within an ecosystem. Unlike a linear food chain, a food web depicts the interrelationships between multiple organisms and their feeding habits. It recognizes that most organisms consume and are consumed by multiple species, creating a network of energy flow.As a matter of fact the food chain are not isolated sequences but are interconnected with one another.  This interconnectivity ensures a more stable ecosystem, as the removal or addition of one species can have cascading effects on other organisms within the web
 
.Difference between food chain and food web:

    Structure: A food chain is a simplified representation of energy transfer in a straight line, while a food web is a more intricate, interconnected network of multiple food chains.
    Complexity: Food chains are relatively straightforward, involving a few organisms at each trophic level, whereas food webs incorporate numerous species and their interactions.
    Interactions: In a food chain, organisms are depicted as having a single prey and a single predator, while a food web recognizes that most organisms have multiple prey and predators, allowing for a more realistic representation of ecological relationships.

In summary, food chains and food webs are both essential concepts in ecology. While food chains provide a linear representation of energy flow, food webs encompass the complex interconnections between multiple organisms and their feeding relationships, providing a more comprehensive understanding of ecosystems.
